In Memory of our fallen
This page is dedicated to the memory of Officer James H. Chandler, Jr., the only Fort Oglethorpe Police Department officer to have lost his life in the line of duty. It serves as a lasting tribute to his courage, sacrifice, and service to our community. We honor his legacy, remember his life, and recognize the profound impact his loss has had on his family, fellow officers, and the city he served with pride.
A Life of Service & Sacrifice
On the morning of September 24, 1982, Officer James H. Chandler, Jr. responded to a bank alarm — a call he would never return from. While en route on his police motorcycle, an intoxicated driver, who had initially yielded to his sirens, suddenly pulled back into his path at the intersection of Route 27 and Cloud Springs Road. Officer Chandler’s motorcycle collided with the rear of the vehicle, throwing him from the bike. He sustained multiple severe injuries. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries the next day due to a burst artery.
Officer Chandler was just 33 years old.
Background & Career
James was a graduate of Lakeview High School and graduated the Floyd College Regional Police Academy in 1979. He proudly served with the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department for four years. During his time with the department, he was known for his dedication to public service and his commitment to protecting the community he called home.
Family & Legacy
James left behind his loving wife Jeannie, and three sons: Mark, Brian, and Sean. Though his time with them was far too short, his memory and example continue to live on through his family and through every officer who wears the badge in Fort Oglethorpe.
In 1999, the police department’s training facility was named in Officer Chandler’s honor — a lasting tribute to his courage, professionalism, and dedication to law enforcement.
Forever Remembered
Officer Chandler remains the only Fort Oglethorpe Police Officer to have died in the line of duty. His sacrifice is a solemn reminder of the dangers faced by those who serve, and his memory is a guiding light for the department and community alike.
