Yesterday evening, the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department received a report of two masked individuals at Sun Tan City.

This morning, officers investigated the incident. Using FLOCK camera technology, officers were able to identify the vehicle and its occupants. The two masked individuals were determined to be teenagers who believed they were playing a practical joke.

While this incident did not result in any injuries, the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department would like to remind the public that actions of this nature can create significant concern and fear among citizens. In today's environment, individuals who intentionally conceal their identity in public places may be perceived as a potential threat, prompting emergency calls and law enforcement responses. Such situations place citizens, responding officers, and the individuals involved at unnecessary risk. What may be intended as a prank can quickly escalate into a dangerous situation with unintended consequences.

The public is also reminded that, under Georgia law, it is unlawful to wear a mask in public for the purpose of concealing one’s identity in this manner. See O.C.G.A. § 16-11-38.

We encourage parents to speak with their children about the potential legal and safety consequences of these types of actions. The Fort Oglethorpe Police Department appreciates the community's vigilance and encourages citizens to continue reporting suspicious activity.
